Text-to-speech pricing explained: subscriptions vs pay-per-use

Text-to-speech pricing looks confusing because tools sell the same underlying thing — synthesized seconds of audio — in very different wrappers: character allowances, credits, tiers, and unlimited-with-asterisks plans.

What the audio actually costs

High-quality neural TTS from the major cloud providers costs the tool roughly $0.24–0.48 per hour of audio at Standard/WaveNet-class quality (per Google's and Microsoft's published rates, converted from per-character prices). A one-minute voiceover costs the vendor well under a cent to a few cents to synthesize. Everything above that is margin, infrastructure, and — importantly — the cost of all the audio you generate but never use.

Why subscriptions dominate
